College to host Santarelli Memorial 5K

Lorain County Community College will hold the 44th Santarelli Memorial 5K at 9:15 a.m., July 23, according to a news release.

The race is open to the public.

The entry fee for the race is $25, which includes a T-shirt, while supplies last, the release said.

Awards will be given to the top 5K finishes in the female, male and age group categories.

A free 1-mile fun run will be held at 9 a.m., prior to the main event.

Named after the late David Santarelli, a former cross country runner at LCCC, the event is held on the college’s historic cross country course which has been the host of the Ohio High School Athletic Associatio­n cross country district championsh­ips in the past, according to the release.

“David continued to help out the team after contractin­g cancer and, after his death, Jack Wilhelm started the race in his honor,” LCCC Cross Country Head Coach and Santarelli Memorial Race Director Jim Powers said in the release.

Students who participat­ed in LCCC’s running camp have free entry to the race, according to the release.

“In addition to the general public, we strongly encourage high school runners in the surroundin­g areas to come out and experience the challenge and fun of cross country running,” said Powers, who will enter his 15th year this fall.

Runners can register prior to the event at www. peaceracin­g.com or on the LCCC website at www.lorainccc.edu.

Proceeds benefit the LCCC Cross Country team and the LCCC Washka Scholarshi­p, the release said.

Race day registrati­on will be available.
