Bike Shop donates bicycles to men’s homeless shelter for transportation to work

- Staff report

The LCCAA Bike Shop, 204 W. 10th St. in downtown Lorain, is helping those in need with basic transportation, according to a news release from the Lorain County Community Action Agency.

The week of July 18, the Bike Shop donated 12 bikes to the St. Elizabeth Center’s men’s homeless shelter in Lorain.

“A lot of times, the men that live there need a bike to get to and from work or to interviews,” said staff member Catherine Watson. “They’ll be very useful for them.”

The shelter, operated by Catholic Charities, plans to purchase bike locks to keep the bicycles secure.

Watson and Elearius Hunter picked up the bikes from the shop after workers in LCCAA’s Youth Services program gave them a test ride and cleaned them up, said Planning and Community Services Director Bobby Taylor.

“We love showing the youth what a great resource the bike shop is for the community,” Taylor said. “Many people rely on bikes as their main transportation, and we’re glad to help.”

The LCCAA Bike Shop is operated by the Youth Services program.

Youth workers learn how to repair and refurbish bikes and sell them at low cost. Parts and repairs are also available to community members.

The Bike Shop is open from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays, and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

The LCCAA Bike Shop, inside the Ronald Nabakowski Youth Center, opened in August of 2019.

The youth also maintain bicycles for the Go Lorain bike share program launched by the Lorain Public Library System.
