Three area champs crowned at state indoor track meet

-

It could be a very big spring for Midview’s Alexis Weber.

The same goes with saying for reigning state champions Olmsted Falls’ Katie Clute and Keystone’s Ryne Shackelford.

The trio put on a show March 3 and 4 at the State Track and Field Indoor Meet at SPIRE in Geneva.

Weber last season was seventh at the Division I state meet in the girls high jump but at SPIRE she went to the top of the podium in the event with a jump of 5 feet, 5 inches.

Weber was also third in the long jump with an effort of 18 feet, 3 1/2 inches.

Also in D-I, Clute — the 3,200 outdoor state champion last spring — won state in the 1,600 indoor run in 10:32.11, more than four seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

At the D-II-III indoor meet, Shackelford — who will play wide receiver at Purdue next fall on a football scholarship — easily won the long with a 23-10 3/4, which was better by more than two feet than the rest of the field.

Last spring, Shackelford was the state champ at the D-II outdoor meet in the long jump, plus the 100 and 200 dashes.

Other All-Ohio (top eight) performers from the area in D-I included:

• Avon Lake’s Braeden Quigly (third, 54.5 3/4) and Avon’s Luke Hamilton (sixth, 53-3 3/4) in shot put.

• Avon Lake pole vaulter Quinn Kroneker (third, 15-3)

• Lorain’s Nakeya Hermon (seventh in 60 dash, 7.67 seconds)

• Amherst’s Ella Baker (fourth in 400 dash, 56.89)

• Avon Lake’s Madeline Betz (eighth in 800, 2:19.28)

• Avon boys 4×200 relay (sixth in 1:31.53)

Other All-Ohio (top eight) performers from the area in D-II and D-III included:

• Keystone long jumper Aubrey Cindia (tied for sixth, 5-0)

• Brookside long jumper Lincoln Barnhart (sixth, 20-4 3/4)

• Oberlin’s Evan Hudson (sixth in 400, 49.70; seventh in 200, 22.55)

• Keystone’s 4×200 relay (third in 1:32.56)
