Crop comments: Aside from the first week of the Crop, Elyria Catholic has been on top the rest of the way, scoring wins of North Ridgeville, Amherst, a split with Westlake that afforded them a GLC West title, and a sweep of Bay. They have a favorable bracket in the Division II North Ridgeville district, as they’ll host a sectional final May 17 and won’t face higher than a 15 seed until a potential district final. … North Ridgeville broke a 41-year “curse” as they clinched an outright conference title after Amherst lost to Avon on May 10 behind an 18-strikeout onehitter by Chase Mayer. The Amherst rotation is lethal even beyond Mayer, with Martin Polonkay and Cam Gendics more than capable of shutting opposing offenses down. … Westlake lost the chance to defend its conference title, but the Demons have set themselves up nicely. With a sectional semifinal win and a potential win over No. 2 Medina to reach the Strongsville District semis, it’s not hard to see the Demons booking a trip to the district finals. … People may ask why Keystone is ahead of Firelands despite the Falcons taking the LC8 with a 13-1 record, and it’s because Firelands has gone 0-10 outside of the conference. Their matchup against Rocky River’s pitching will be a good test for the Falcons to open up sectional play. … Bay slots in one spot ahead of Firelands at No. 6, with Wellington, Open Door and Avon Lake rounding out the Top 10. Note: All records are through May 13.
