Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is a day to honor, remember and mourn the U.S. military personnel who have died in the course of carrying out their duties or as a result of injuries incurred during battle. This day is one of remembrance and reflection on the ultimate cost of freedom in the United States of America.

Lorain County Community College Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony : Friday, May 26th at 12:00, Reaser Grand Room in Spitzer
Join us in commemorating Memorial Day by hearing from US Army Colonel (ret.) Ron Schwachenwald and US Coast Guard Commander (ret.) Rick DeChant on the true meaning of the holiday. Mr. John Haynes, a seasoned Elyria lawyer, will join them to recount the heroism he witnessed from US troops in England during the German blitzkrieg and WWII. LCCC Vice Presidents Dr. Jonathan Dryden and Dr. Marisa Vernon White will give opening and closing remarks, and light refreshments will be served. This event is open to the community.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial exists to remember and honor the 98 men from Lorain County who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. The reading of the names takes place every year.

Eaton Township Memorial Day Service at Butternut Ridge Cemetery, Eaton Township at 1:00 p.m. Guest speaker is Dr. Edward P. Horvath, combat physician and decorated Iraq War veteran. (Call for volunteers to place America Flags on 500 veterans’ graves at Butternut Ridge Cemetery, Eaton Township. Meet at cemetery’s pole barn off Durkee Rd. at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 27).

Sunday, May 28, 2023 Brownhelm The Shortest Parade in Town is happening once again on the Sunday before Memorial Day. Parade participants line up by 1:30 p.m. with the parade leaving at 1:45 p.m. to head to the Brownhelm Cemetery. Participants should gather at the corners of North Ridge and Claus Road (south). The Amherst American Legion leads the parade followed by the Brownhelm Historical Association wagon, Brownhelm 4-H Club, antique cars, tractors & more! At the Veterans Memorial site, a short ceremony honoring our Veterans will follow. All are welcome to join in the parade or the presentation at the Brownhelm Cemetery.
