Historical Society to present Genealogy Workshop Series

The Lorain County Historical Society will offer a Genealogy Workshop Series this fall in Elyria, presented by national expert Deborah Abbott, PhD, according to a news release.

The three Saturday sessions will last 90 minutes.

The sessions will start at 10 a.m., beginning on Sept. 16, at the Lorain County History Center, 284 Washington Ave. in Elyria. Topics and dates are:

• Session 1, Sept. 16 — Beginning Genealogy: A Journey into the Past

• Session 2, Oct. 7 — Vital Records and Other Sources: The Cornerstone of Genealogical Research

• Session 3, Nov. 4 — Strategies and Techniques: Breaking the Brick Wall of Slave Research

The workshops are free, but advance registration is required.

Each session has individual registration; attend one, two or all three.

Abbott is a professional genealogist specializing in genealogical methodology, manuscript collections and African American family research.

She is a member of the Cuyahoga County Archives Commission and the Lake View Cemetery Community Outreach Committee, past president of the African American Genealogical Society and a retired professor of counseling at Cuyahoga Community College, all in Cleveland.

Abbott is coordinator of both the African American Track at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research in Athens, Ga., and the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh.

The Lorain County Historical Society, founded in 1889, collects, preserves and shares the history of Lorain County to educate and inspire present and future generations.
