Lavon Jackson, 73, of Lorain, transition­ed from his life here on earth into his eternal rest in heaven on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at St. John West Shore Hospital in Westlake after battling complicate­d illnesses. He was born May 30, 1950 in Thomasvill­e, NC, to Furman and Gertrude (Davis) Jackson. The young family moved him and his twin sister Lorraine to Sandusky OH at an early age. He attended Perkins and Sandusky Public Schools. He is a 1969 graduate of Sandusky High School where he excelled in football and track and it was in football that he earned the nickname “Crusher”. In track he was a member of the State Champion 880 yard relay team setting the school record at 1.28 in his senior year, which led to his induction into the SHS Hall of Fame in 1999. Lavon briefly attended Flint Junior College on a track scholarshi­p before being drafted into the U.S. Army serving 4 years of active duty, and 23 years in the Reserves attaining the rank of Platoon Sergeant and Tank Commander. He retired from Ford Motor Co. Lorain and Avon plants after 30 years of perfect attendance. Lavon mentored young men and was active in many organizati­ons such as the American Legion, former Sgt. at Arms for the UAW, The 100 Men of Lorain County, Lorain Police Auxiliary, and LCABSE of which he’s a former President and Treasurer. Among his numerous accomplish­ments and accolades include the NAACP Living Black History Award, various athletic trophies, medals, and certificat­es of recognitio­n for community service from the mayor, and senator and so many more. He also enjoyed hobbies such as watch collecting, buying gadgets, faithfully taking care of his home, detailing his vehicles, and watching sports. His memory will be cherished for his smile, laughter, and great love of family and friends. Lavon was preceded in death by his beloved parents, his sister Faye, and son Kenji. He leaves behind his loving wife of 37 years, Bernadette; his son, Pastor Jason of Lorain; a twin sister, Lorraine Jackson of Jacksonvil­le NC; brothers Jerry Jackson of Sandusky and Michael Jackson of Trotwood OH; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and a lifetime of friends who love him dearly. Visitation will be Friday, October 20, 2023, from 7:00-9:00 PM at Faith Ministries, 1306 Euclid Ave, Lorain OH 44052, where funeral services will be held Saturday, October 21st, at 10:00 AM.
