Lorain man accused of drug trafficking
Search warrant turns up over 15 grams of meth
In a joint operation, the Elyria and Lorain police departments along with the Federal Bureau of Investigations seized more than 15 grams of methamphetamine at a Lorain residence and arrested a Lorain man.
David Collins, 42, was charged with trafficking in drugs, a third-degree felony, and possession of a controlled substance, also a third-degree felony, according to an Elyria police report.
Law enforcement conducted the raid based on a search warrant at 7 a.m., Feb. 6, at 1309 W. Second St. in Lorain, as part of an on-going drug trafficking investigation with Collins as the primary focus of the investigation.
Along with the other law enforcement agencies, the Lorain Police Department’s SWAT team was utilized to force open the door after Collins refused to answer, the report stated.
As officers entered the residence, they were immediately greeted by Collins in a front room.
Collins was detained while the search was conducted.
During the search, detectives found 15.9 grams of suspected methamphetamine, along with various narcotics-related paraphernalia, and large quantities of live ammunition, the report stated.
All items were seized and taken to the Elyria Police Department and the narcotics will be sent to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for further analysis.
Collins was transported to the Elyria Police Department for further questioning where he admitted to owning the contraband, according to the report.
Collins told investigators he not only had the meth for personal use, but also sold small amounts to people who frequent his residence, the report stated.
He indicated that he normally purchases 1 ounce of meth at a time from various suppliers in Lorain, Elyria and East Cleveland, according to the report.
Collins also admitted to possessing the ammunition but stated that he sold his firearms after his last arrest, the report stated.
At the conclusion of the interview, Collins complained of chest pains to detectives and was transported to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center before being booked into the Lorain County Jail.
Collins remains in custody at the jail on a $100,000 bond.
He is scheduled to appear in Lorain Municipal Court on Feb. 15, records show.
