Shots fired into house; two men facing charges

Elyria police arrested two Lorain men on charges they shot into a residence and wounded an occupant.

At 4:46 a.m., Feb. 11, Elyria officers responded to the 100 block of Erie Street for a report of shots fired into a residence, according to a news release issued by Elyria police Capt. Phillip Hammonds.

As the result of the preliminar­y investigat­ion, Nathaniel Melendez, 22, was charged with burglary, a second-degree felony, and obstructin­g official business, a fifth-degree felony, the release stated.

David Santos, 22, was charged with burglary, a second-degree felony; having weapons while under disability, a third-degree felony; receiving stolen property — firearm, a fourth-degree felony; and obstructin­g official business, a fifth-degree felony, the release stated.

Upon arrival at the residence, officers talked to someone inside the residence who suffered a “grazing” wound to his leg, the release stated.

The victim was treated on scene and declined any transport to the hospital.

No other injuries were reported, the release noted.

Officers determined that the residence was struck multiple times by gunfire, and several spent casings were collected outside by investigat­ors.

A preliminar­y investigat­ion led officers to a residence in the 400 block of Eighth Street in Elyria.

Officers attempted to speak with the people inside but were unsuccessf­ul.

The Elyria Police Special Response Team was activated to assist, the release stated.

During the several hour incident, four people exited the residence and were interviewe­d by detectives, the release stated.

Officers entered the house and no one else was inside, according to the release.

A court-authorized search of the residence was completed, the release stated.

The Elyria Police Department is continuing to investigat­e the shooting, according to the release.
