Lorain High School Drama Club will present “Mean Girls: High School Version” at 7 p.m., March 15 and 16, at Lorain High School Performing Arts Center, 2601 Pole Ave.

This rendition of “Mean Girls High School Version” has been performed only a few of times by high schools in Northeast Ohio, but none around Lorain, according to Regan Onweller, drama teacher and drama club director.

This also is one of the first years the script for “Mean Girls High School Version” has been made available for amateur use instead of only professional use, which helped sway the decision to go with this production, Onweller said.

“The kids, oh my God, they were so excited,” she said. “From what I hear, it’s a little different from the filmed musical version, but the heart of it is still there. The characters are still there, most of the happenings.”

Many things original to the 2004 film “Mean Girls” will be referenced, like the iconic Burn Book and Kalteen bars as well as memorable quotes, scenes and characters, according to Onweller.

“We’re definitely going to hear ‘fetch’ more than once,” she said.

Compared to last year’s show with 13 performers, Onweller said with her newfound confidence in herself as director and the students as actors, this is the school’s biggest production in her three years with 22 cast members.

There also will be a pit section with 20 students and adults playing the ensembles.

“The big thing people should anticipate (are) powerhouse vocals, truly,” she said. “I am beyond impressed with many of my students, truly all of them and their abilities.

“They are some of the strongest singers and performers we’ve had come through Lorain High.”

Onweller said she has worked hard the last three years to grow the drama department and put on productions that not only the audience will enjoy but the students as well.

“Honestly, it makes me feel really proud; I love my students more than myself some days, they are why I do what I do,” she said. “I’m just really proud all the time. The drama club is my everything. It’s my favorite part of my day.”

Paying homage to “On Wednesdays, we wear pink,” Onweller said, guests are encouraged to dress in pink for both nights of the show.

Students are tickets are $5 and adults are $10.

There is no cost for children age 5 and younger, veterans and senior citizens.

Tickets can be purchased at the door.
