Lorain: Joan B. Gluvna, 91, of Lorain, died Thursday March 14, 2024 at Anchor Lodge Nursing Home in Lorain following a long illness.

Joan was born October 28, 1932 in Lorain to Joseph J. & Anna W. Gluvna (nee Homola).

She attended Holy Trinity School and Lorain High School and graduated from Marymount High School in Garfield Heights in 1950. She entered the convent of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity in Bedford in 1949 where she was known as Sister Jeanne Marie. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from St John College in Cleveland in 1959 and her Master’s Degree in Education from Bowling Green State University in 1981.

Joan taught at various parochial schools in the Cleveland Diocese from 1951 to 1963. Upon returning to Lorain, Miss Gluvna taught at St Peter School in 1964 and 1965. In 1966, she was employed by Lorain City Schools and taught at Masson Elementary School for 28 years retiring in 1994. She worked as a substitute teacher until 2003.

Joan was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain where she was a member of the Altar & Rosary Society, served on parish council, was a Lector and taught in the Parish School of Religion for 25 years.

She was a member of St Anne’s Lodge Branch #114 and Slovak Catholic Sokols Wreath #111.

Joan was a member of the former St Joseph Hospital Auxiliary and served as a volunteer from 1982 until it’s closing. She also volunteere­d in the Oncology Department of Community Health Partners and at Hospice of St Joseph.

She was a member of the Lorain Education Associatio­n of Retired Teachers, having served as president and secretary; the Lorain County Retired Teachers Associatio­n where she served as correspond­ing secretary and the AAUW Investment Club.

She enjoyed reading and traveling throughout North America, Europe, the Middle East and the Orient.

She is survived by her brother Joseph J. Gluvna (Linda) of Lorain, sister-in-law Germaine Gluvna (nee DiSimone), nieces Judy Gluvna, Joan Godlewski (Dan), Janice O’Connor (John) and Anne Arno (Sean); nephews: Joey Gluvna and Jim Gluvna (Carri), many great and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother John J. Gluvna in 2022 nephew Jack Gluvna in 2023 uncle Rev William Homola and sister-in-law Bernie Gluvna.

The family will receive friends Monday March 18, 2024 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1305 E Erie Ave, Lorain. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Monday March 18, 2024 at 11:00 am in the church. The Rev. Kenneth Katricak OSB will preside. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
