Groups to host Citizens Not Politicians signature drive-thru

- By Editorial staff news@morningjournal.com

Volunteers with the League of Women’s Voters of Lorain County and Fair Districts Ohio will collect signatures in support of the Citizens Not Politicians campaign from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., May 5, at West Park, 1200 Foster Ave. in Elyria, according to a news release.

You do not have to get out of your car to sign, the release said.

Just drive-thru and volunteers will bring the petitions to you, according to the release.

The grassroots coalition supporting the Citizens Not Politicians campaign is gathering more than 700,000 signatures to put an amendment to the Ohio Constitution on the Nov. 5 ballot, the release said.

The amendment, should it pass, would establish a 15-member Ohio Citizens Redistricting Commission.

This citizen-led Redistricting Commission would work to create fair and representative legislative maps for Ohio House and Senate districts and U.S. House of representative districts.

The Redistricting Commission will be made up of five Republicans, five Democrats and five Independent citizens, according to the release.

Citizens will be vetted by a bipartisan screening panel of four retired judges, along with the Ohio Ballot Board.

Current politicians, political party officials, lobbyists and large political donors would be barred from sitting on the Redistricting Commission for six years, the release said.

“Together Ohioans can slay the gerrymander,” the release said.” We can make Ohio government more representative of all of its citizens.”
