News-Herald all-stars for softball unveiled

-

Led by Player of the Year Allison Golic of Mentor, The News-Herald 2016 high school softball all-star team is announced.

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Allison Golic Mentor, senior

A dynamic high school career came to a close at the Division I regional tournament when Mentor lost to eventual state champion Walsh Jesuit, that of senior pitcher Allison Golic. A four-year starter, Golic capped her career by going 10-2 this season, giving up only 15 runs in 79 1⁄3 innings. She struck out 114 and walked 21. Opposing batters hit only .176 against her. On top of that, Golic batted .353, which was second-best on Mentor’s team. Golic, headed to Eastern Illinois on a softball scholarship, led Mentor not only to the Division I regional tournament for the third time in four years, but she also helped the Cardinals win a share of the Greater Cleveland Conference title this year. Golic carried the Mentor program on her shoulders for four years. And while this isn’t a career achievement award, what she gave to the program over the past four years will be difficult to replace. — John Kampf
