Heart health: Important questions to ask your doctor.

-

Your heart is like the engine in your car. It’s the main component that makes everything run. And just like your car requires maintenance to keep things running smoothly, your heart needs care on a regular basis too.

“The center of the cardiovascular system is the heart. It’s responsible for your vitality,” says Jason Confino, MD, a cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic Willoughby Hills Family Health Center.

Taking care of your heart is essential for a long life. Heart disease is the number one killer of adults in the United States. Some heart issues are genetic and others are caused by personal choices.

Cleveland Clinic Willoughby Hills cardiologist Kamal Riad, MD, explains, “Not only is it important for patients to listen to their doctor, it’s also important for them to ask their physician the right questions.”

Drs. Confino and Riad provide general answers to these important questions about heart health. However, your doctor knows you best and can provide personalized answers to help ensure that you understand how to take proper care of your heart.

Will blood tests and other screenings tell me if my heart is healthy?

Knowing your BMI, cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels will give you a clearer picture of your cardiovascular strengths or risks. “These numbers can be indicators for issues that can lead to cardiovascular problems,” says Dr. Riad.

Does my family medical history put me at a greater risk for heart disease?

Anyone can be at risk, but a family history of heart issues – such as heart attack and heart disease – can mean you have increased risk for developing heart problems. If this is the case, healthy behaviors may be even more important for you.

Will smoking increase my chances of having heart issues?

Individuals who smoke are more likely to experience heart attacks than non-smokers. “The sooner you quit the better,” advises Dr. Confino.

Are diet and exercise important for keeping my heart in tip-top shape?

A healthy diet and exercise are some of the best tools you can use to keep your heart healthy. At least 30 minutes of exercise, five days a week, is recommended. Eat foods that are low in fat, salt and calories. Include fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grains, lean proteins and nuts.

“Having open dialogue with your physician and asking questions are the best ways for you to learn about what to do before cardiovascular issues arise,” says Dr. Riad.
