Boys basketball player of the year watch list

The News-Herald will present its annual boys basketball player of the year as part of the Varsity Chalk Talk Show at Hooley House on Tuesday, March 27. Here are a list of leading candidates as the regular season winds down. (in alphabetic­al order)

2016 News-Herald Player of the Year scored 25 points in Cornerston­e’s 67-60 win at Mentor in double overtime. Scored 22 points in the second half and overtimes to help the Patriots overcome a double-digit deficit in the second half. The 6-foot-4 Furman commit averages 25.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. Shoots 50 percent from 3-point range.

Scored 10 points in Hawken’s loss to Gilmour. Lake Erie College commit ranks sixth in the area and leads the Hawks in scoring at 19.3 points per game. Brown is third in the area with 47 made 3-pointers and averages 3.9 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

Scored 16 points in a win over Madison and finished with 12 in a loss at Mayfield. Leads the 14-5 Arcs in scoring at 15.5 points per game.

Scored 21 points in a win over Padua and added 15 points in a loss to VASJ. Cougars sophomore forward averages a doubledoub­le of 20.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.

Defending News-Herald Player of the Year scored 11 points in a victory over St. Thomas Aquinas and led all scorers with 29 in a win at Lake Catholic. Vikings senior point guard leads the team with 24.1 points on 50 percent shooting, 6.1 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 4.2 steals per game. The last player to lead VASJ in those four categories for a season was Clark Kellogg.

Scored 23 points in Benedictin­e’s victory against Walsh Jesuit. Bengals senior guard is averaging 15.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.2 assists and two steals per game.

Posted 16 points and 10 rebounds in Gilmour’s win against Hawken. Kirincic averages 21.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Became Gilmour’s all-time leading scorer this season.

Scored 36 points in a victory over Riverside. Leads the area in scoring with 29.4 points per game. Sulka owns the career scoring record at Chardon, and has posted games of 51 and 45 points this season.

Scored 23 points in Mentor’s win over 15-3 Brunswick. Led Mentor with 19 in a loss to Cornerston­e Christian in double overtime. Leads Mentor with 17.3 points, six rebounds and 2.3 steals per game. Zalba leads the Cardinals and the area with 6.3 assists per game.
