An elderly resident was able to escape uninjured from a Euclid apartment fire Feb. 25.

According to a news release from the Euclid Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched at 9:39 p.m. to the Normandy Tower Apartment complex, 24801 Lake Shore Blvd. The department said the call originated from the building’s recently upgraded alarm system.

Fourteen Euclid firefighters responded to the scene, extinguishing the flames within seven minutes of arrival.

Upon entering the building, crews saw black smoke coming from an apartment on the first floor of the nine-story building. They entered the apartment and searched for residents while extinguishing the fire with one hose line.

No injuries were reported.

The origin and cause are under investigation, the release stated. The preliminary loss estimate for the building and contents is $23,000.

“Residents of high-rise apartment buildings are reminded to evacuate the building if the fire alarm sounds and it is safe to do so,” the department stated in the release.

“If there is smoke or fire in the hallway or you find smoke in the stairwell, close the door to your apartment and shelter in place until firefighters put the fire out and clear the smoke. Residential high-rise buildings are designed to contain the fire and smoke to the unit of origin. If your life is in danger, call 911 and report your location,” the release stated.
