The Gilmour girls basketball team had a longdistance drive from Gates Mills to Ashtabula for the Division II district tournament on Feb. 26.

Once the Lancers got to Lakeside, they decided to stick with the “long distance” mantra.

Top-seeded Gilmour made an eye-popping 13 threepointers, paving the way for a 71-30 win over fourth-seeded VASJ in the first of two district semifinals.

Gilmour advances to the district final on March 1 to play second-seeded Perry. The defending district champion Pirates defeated third-seeded NDCL, 33-29, in the nightcap in Ashtabula.

“They’ve won a lot of games, a lot of big games,” Gilmour coach John Curran said of Coach Brindi Kandel’s Pirates. “We’re looking forward to the opportunity to play them for a district championship.”

With VASJ concentrating on taking Michigan recruit Naz Hillmon out of the game defensively, Gilmour turned to its perimeter game.

Sarah Bohn hit six threepointers

to lead Gilmour’s marksmanship from the perimeter.

Hillmon, who averages 21 points and 14 rebounds per game, was held to 10 points. But she had six assists in the first half alone.

“Naz wasn’t our leading scorer, which might have been the first time all year,” Curran said. “But she kicked the ball out, and the girls hit their shots.”

Gilmour had a commanding 28-10 lead after one, which turned into a 47-18 lead at the break. It was 68-20 going into the fourth, when reserves took over.
