News-Herald girls basketball Player of the Year watch list

The News-Herald will present the girls basketball Player of the Year award as part of the Varsity Chalk Talk Show at Hooley House on March 27. The following players are leading candidates as the tournament season gets going.

The junior guard scored 25 points in the Panthers’ 67-59 loss to North. She finished the season averaging 19.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3.3 steals per game.

The senior forward, who will be going to the University of Michigan on a basketball scholarshi­p, had 21 points in the Lancers’ win over Lake Catholic. She is averaging 21.0 points, 14.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game, while shooting more than 70 percent from the field heading into the Lancers’ district semifinal against VASJ.

The sophomore guard/forward scored 23 points in the Rangers’ 67-49 win over Euclid. For the season, she is averaging 19.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.6 steals and 1.0 blocks per game heading into North’s district semifinal against Chardon.

The senior forward scored 16 points and had 18 rebounds in the Cardinals’ 62-58 loss to Chardon. She finished the season averaging 18.1 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. She is going to the University of Akron on a volleyball scholarshi­p.

The senior forward scored 24 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in the Rangers’ 67-49 win over Euclid. For the season, she is averaging 18.3 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.1 blocks per game heading into a Division I district semifinal against Chardon.

The senior guard finished the season averaging 19.3 points (with 65 3-pointers), 5.3 assists and 4.8 steals per game.

The senior guard/forward scored 20 points in the Hornets’ 55-37 win over Beachwood. For the season, the Baldwin Wallace recruit is averaging 21.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 4.3 steals per game heading into her team’s district semifinal game against Lutheran West.
