When: 7 p.m., March 1 Where: Perry, 1 Success Blvd., Perry
On deck: Winner plays the winner of Massillon Jackson and Canton GlenOak at 8 p.m. on March 6 in a regional semifinal at Canton Memorial Civic Center
North’s path: The Rangers defeated Euclid, 67-49; defeated Chardon, 50-41
Kenston’s path: The Bombers defeated Shaw, 61-53; defeated Geneva, 54-44
For the record: North (21-3) got the best of Kenston twice this year — 67-48, on Jan. 3 when the Bombers were held scoreless for nearly seven minutes, and, 67-59, in overtime on Feb. 3 when the Bombers let slip a double-digit halftime lead. In short, this game could really go either way, though North has the advantage with its two previous wins . ... Kenston had its most success against North this year when it forced turnovers. Expect defensive wizard Corenna Maynard to play man-up on North’s Destiny Leo. But defending Samantha Pirosko, who averages a double-double, could be problematic for the Bombers . ... Leo and Pirosko combined for 38 points against Chardon, with Pirosko pulling down 21 rebounds . ... Maynard had 21 against Geneva. The Bombers shot only 11-of-26 from the freethrow line, something they will have to improve upon to beat the Rangers this time . ... Expect a high-energy, gritty-defense type of game — as usual with these two teams.
Kampf’s pick: North
(1) GILMOUR VS. (2) PERRY
What: Division II district final
When: 7 p.m., March 1 Where: Lakeside High School, 6600 Sanborn Road, Ashtabula
On deck: Winner plays the winner of Lodi Cloverleaf and Bay at 8 p.m. on March 6 in a regional semifinal at Barberton High School
Gilmour’s path: Gilmour defeated Lake Catholic, 63-20; defeated VASJ, 70-28
Perry’s path: Perry defeated Hawken, 59-36; defeated NDCL, 33-29
For the record: The Pirates are in the Division II district final for the second year in a row, while the Lancers are the reigning Division III champs who have moved up to Division II through the OHSAA’s competitive balance measure. ... Perry’s four losses are to Geneva, Cornerstone, Chardon and North. Gilmour’s three losses have come to Mason, Huber Heights Wayne and North Allegheny (Pa.) . ... Perry is at its best when it can play tough defense and keep the score in the 40-to-50-point range. Claire Dolan leads the team in scoring, but others such as Anna Sorine, Elle Infalvi and Madyson Hacking can have big games as well . ... Gilmour is a tough doubleedged sword to defend. Naz Hillmon (a 6-foot-2 Michigan recruit) averages 21 points and 14 rebounds, but the trio of Sarah Bohn, Emma Gurley and Annika Corcoran has each hit more than 50 3-pointers this year. It’s a pick-your-poison type of thing defending them.
Kampf’s pick: Gilmour Feb. 28 games: 1-1 Kampf’s record: 33-5
