Browns sign Landry to five-year contract

The Browns targeted wide receiver as a position of need when the 2017 season ended, so one of the first moves they made when the league year officially began last month was to trade for Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry.

Shipping a 2018 fourthround pick and a 2019 seventh-round pick to the Dolphins for Landry was only half the project because Landry was on a one-year contract. General manager John Dorsey made signing him to an extension a priority, and the Browns took care of that on April 13 when Landry officially inked a deal worth a reported $75.5 million with $47 million guaranteed.

“Jarvis Landry is the type of football player we want on this team for a long time,” Dorsey said in a statement. “Obviously, he’s an accomplished playmaker. That’s why we went after him in the trade but in his short time as a Brown we can already see the type of leadership and competitiveness he’s going to bring to his teammates. We are very pleased that we’ve been able to secure him to a longterm contract.”

Landry, a 6-foot, 205-pound receiver, caught 400 passes in four seasons with the Dolphins. He caught a league-best 112 passes for 987 yards last season.

“I have never believed in luck because I’ve always believed in God,” Landry said in a statement. “What God has for you, no other man can take, stop or have. I’ve always dreamed of two things: Taking care of my family and playing football.

“I’ve become a product of hard-work, sacrifice, persistence, and mental toughness. Jerry Rice said the thing that made him so great was the fear of failure. I’ve been afraid of failure my whole life.”

The Browns plan to play Landry with Josh Gordon and Corey Coleman. Coleman could be the odd man out if the Browns draft another receiver.
