Samuel Rockwell, 97, a longtime Mentor resident, passed away April 8, 2018. He was born November 23, 1920 in Cleveland. Mr. Rockwell retired from the Cleveland Fire Department Station 31 after 35 years of service. He was a drill Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. He raised his 3 sons in Euclid with his wife, Catherine (Kay), of 63 years. He was the founder and President of the Northeast Ohio Umpire Associatio­n and umped for more than 15 years. He was also a baseball coach for many years for his 3 sons’ little league teams growing up. He loved to golf and spend time with his family and friends. He was an avid baseball fan and even up until his early 90’s was a big supsportbe­ing porter of his grandchild­ren and great-grandchild­ren’s ing events. He spent most of the last 2 years of his life cared for by Jodi Lynn in her home.

Survivors are his sons, Samuel Rockwell Jr., William (NanSamuel cy) Rockwell, and Thomas Rockwell; grandchild­ren, “Butch” Rockwell V., Julie (Ryan) Rogers, Drew (Maleana) Haman, Wendy Vlach, Allison (Mark) Wegener, Halle (David, Deceased) Robinson, Michael (Lena) Rockwell, Billy (Misurvived chelle) Rockwell, and Cassie Rockwell. He is also by 17 great-grandchild­ren, and his brother, Stillman Rockby well.

He was preceded in death his parents, Samuel and LuLucille, cille Rockwell; and his sisters, Gert, Nell, and Edith.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at the Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mena.m., tor, OH 44060.

A funeral service in honor of Sam will be held 10 Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the funeral home. Interment will be at Mentor Cemetery.
