“Our chapter is faith-based. We apply biblical principles and digital technology to the best evidencebased practices of peer support recovery.”

Statistically, one in every five adults are living with some type of mental illness, said Brian Jones, who is the lead facilitator for Depression Bipolar Support Alliance Chapter of Northeast Ohio.

That is over 40 million Americans — more than the populations of New York and Florida combined, according to Mental Health America.

“This month, the City of Painesville lost a wellknown gentleman from death by suicide,” said Jones. “This added emphasis and gave us a local urgency.”

Therefore, due to the national and local prevalence of mental health conditions, the DBSA Northeast Ohio chapter aims to raise awareness and share resources for individuals and families living with bipolar, depression, substance use or trauma-related conditions.

The DBSA of Northeast Ohio serves Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties.

“Our chapter is faithbased,” Jones said. “We apply biblical principles and digital technology to the best evidence-based practices of peer support recovery.”

The organization is hosting an event on May 30 at Morley Library in Painesville to educate the community on the role of a DBSA Peer Specialist. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. in Meeting Room A on the lower level.

While Morley Library will provide the venue for the event, DBSA is not affiliated or endorsed by the library.

This event is another way DBSA is celebrating Mental Health Month.

Since 1949, Mental Health America and affiliates across the country have led the observance of May as Mental Health Month.

Mental Health America is a nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and to promoting the overall mental health of all Americans.

“The presentation is free and anyone who wants to attend is welcome,” he said. “Not only do these illnesses impact the individual, but it affects the entire family and community. We’re trying to help heal our community.”
