Roar by the Shore returns to Mentor Beach Park
Proceeds to benefit home for military veterans
A relatively new Labor Day weekend tradition is continuing in Mentor-onthe-Lake.
The third annual Roar by the Shore MOL Annual Cruise-in is noon to 4 p.m., Sept. 1, at Mentor Beach Park, 7779 Lake Shore Blvd.
The show is open to all cars and will feature goodie bags for participants, a DJ, raffle prizes, food vendors and more.
Like the last two years, funds raised above operations costs will be donated to the Greater Cleveland Fisher House for veterans. The Fisher House provides free housing for loved ones of veterans who are undergoing treatment at Louis B. Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center in University Circle. Ground was broken for an additional home in the spring.
The first cruise-in, held in 2016, attracted more than 200 vehicles and raised $1,200 for charity.
“We anticipate a similar or greater turnout this year,” said Paul Morris, city councilman and cruise committee chairman, in a letter to potential sponsors.
“With continued success, we look forward to evolving each year.”
The committee was begun by a small group of residents and city officials who wanted to bring back some local entertainment to the community, hit hard by recreation budget cuts in 2014. Among the losses were the Labor Day Parade, the recreation reimbursement program with Mentor and an annual car show started by former Mayor John Rogers.
The city-funded car show last was held in 2013. Morris was joined by fellow councilmen Rob Johnson and Jim Lunder in working to revive the cruise-in.
