Panthers hit hard by early injuries

- The Associated Press

The Panthers will be without three-time Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen and second-team AllPro Bowl right tackle Daryl Williams for the foreseeable future.

The team announced Tuesday that Olsen refractured the same right foot that kept him out of nine games last season in Carolina’s 16-8 win over Dallas on Sunday. Olsen will not have surgery and will be reevaluated on a “monthly basis.” He’ll remain on the team’s roster in hopes that he can return later in the season as he did a year ago.

Williams suffered an undisclosed knee injury and will need surgery.

Ranked as the top right tackle in the NFL last season by Pro Football Focus, Williams is likely headed for injured reserve. He tore the MCL and dislocated the patella in his right knee in training camp, but fought back to play in the season opener.

FALCONS’ JONES SIDELINED » The Atlanta Falcons have placed linebacker Deion Jones on injured reserve.

Jones is the second key 2017 Pro Bowler on the defense to be placed on IR in less than a week. Jones hurt his foot in Thursday night’s 18-12 opening loss at Philadelphia.

The team on Friday said safety Keanu Neal will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

YZERAN STEPS DOWN » In a stunning turn of events on the eve of training camp, Steve Yzerman is stepping down as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning after building them into a perennial contender.

A person with knowledge of the move told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Yzerman is leaving his post and will be replaced immediately by longtime assistant Julien BriseBois. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced Yzerman’s decision.

Yzerman’s move comes days before the Lightning open training camp following a trip to the Eastern Conference final.

USA TOPS MEXICO » Tyler Adams scored his first international goal, four minutes after Angel Zaldivar was ejected for a studs-up tackle, and the United States rebounded from a poor first half for a 1-0 victory over Mexico on Tuesday night, the Americans’ first win over their rival in three years.

Adams, a 19-year-old who made his national team debut last November, scored after Kellyn Acosta passed to a sprinting Antonee Robinson on the left flank. Robinson crossed for Adams, who one-timed the ball from the penalty spot past goalkeeper Hugo Gonzalez.
