Lake County levies in five communities to be decided
Voters in five communities in Lake County will decide whether to approve or deny a total of six renewal levies during the Nov. 6 general election.
In Fairport Harbor Village, a proposed 3.9-mill, five-year current operating expenses renewal levy is on the ballot.
If passed, the levy’s annual net cost to residents would be $112.13 per $100,000 in residential property valuation, according to the Lake County Auditor’s Office.
It’s expected to yield $179,919 annually.
As of Oct. 26, there are 2,177 registered voters in the village, the Lake County Board of Elections reports.
In Leroy Township, a proposed 1.5-mill, five-year road renewal levy is on the ballot, down from a 2.5-mill levy which voters rejected in May.
If passed, the levy’s annual net cost to residents would be $45.94 per $100,000 in residential property valuation, according to the Auditor’s Office.
It’s expected annual yield would be $171,926.
Leroy Trustee Chuck Klco believes the township can’t afford to lose the improvement levy.
“We’re doing whatever we have to in order to keep our roads safe and open,” he said. “Leroy prides itself on being self-sustaining, and cuts at the state level to our budget have affected a lot of small communities. We have to take care of us.”
According to the Elections Board, 2,306 people are registered to vote in Leroy.
Madison School District has placed a 1-mill, fiveyear general permanent improvements levy on the ballot, which if passed, would cost $14.06 per $100,000 in residential property valuation, the Auditor’s Office confirmed.
An annual yield of $188,301 is expected.
According to the Elections Board, 11,749 people are registered to vote in the district.
In the Lake County Library District, Morley Library, voters will decide on a continuing renewal of an existing 1-mill levy for operating expenses.
If passed, the cost would be $30.16 per $100,000 in residential property valuation, according to the Auditor’s Office.
It’s expected to yield $1,170,833.
Morley Library Director Aurora Martinez said during just one month, many families, individuals, seniors and businesses visit Morley Library or its website for hundreds of dollars’ worth of materials and services for which they may only have paid around $30 in local taxes that year.
“Taxpayer investment in libraries supports an informed, engaged and literate community with affordable options for families and seniors, contributing to a positive quality of life. Strong libraries are vital to strong communities.
“For the past 30 years, voters have consistently approved our only source of local tax support,” she said.
The Elections Board reports a total of 34,509 voters in the library district.
Two proposed levies will be decided by WilloughbyEastlake Schools voters: a 4.81-mill, 10-year emergency requirements renewal; and a 3.9-mill, five-year emergency requirements renewal.
If passed, both would commence the 2019 tax year and would cost $168.35 and $136.50, respectively, per $100,000 residential property valuation, according to the Auditor’s Office.
Annual yields of $7,600,000, for the 10-year, and $5,975,000, for the fiveyear, would begin in 2019.
The Elections Board reports 45,958 voters are registered in the school district.
