Cleveland is on a roll as an all-star venue.
During a media event Nov. 1 at Quicken Loans Arena, NBA commissioner Adam Silver officially announced the home of the Cleveland Cavaliers will be the site of the 2022 NBA AllStar Game.
It will be the second NBA All-Star Game staged at the downtown arena. The first was in 1997 at what then was called Gund Arena.
Dates for the 2022 AllStar Game and allied elements such as the 3-point shootout and Slam Dunk competition have yet to be established.
Silver said he was working for the league as an assistant to then-commissioner David Stern in 1997 and has fond memories of that All-Star Game and events tied to the NBA’s 50th anniversary celebration.
“It was a memorable event,” Silver said. “I’m sure we’ll plan similar things for 2022 and will make this another outstanding moment in NBA history.”
The 2022 All-Star Game will fall during the NBA’s 75th season
Silver credited the Cavaliers, City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County Council, Destination Cleveland and various civic groups for working together to land the 2022 NBA All-Star Game.
Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish said the estimated economic impact of the 2022 NBA AllStar Fame will be $100 million. Another factor in the NBA awarding the 2022 AllStar Game to Cleveland was the ongoing renovation of Quicken Loans Arena. The $185 million project began this summer and is on track to be finished by September 2019.
The announcement of the 2022 NBA All-Star Game coming to Cleveland follows on the heels of Major League Baseball bringing the 2019 All-Star Game to Progressive Field. That game is scheduled for July 9.
In addition to the 1997 All-Star Dame at Gund Arena, the Cavs hosted the 1981 NBA All-Star Game at the Coliseum of Richfield.
The Indians have hosted five All-Star Games, the most recent in 1997 at what then was called Jacobs Field.
