Madison Village government leaders might have to wait a bit longer than expected to celebrate the opening of the first of two new hotels near the Interstate 90 and Route 528 interchange.

The Holiday Inn Express and Suites being built at 181 Water Tower Drive had been planning a Feb. 13 grand opening and ribbon cutting. But it now appears that the event might not be held until mid-March, said Madison Village Administrator Dwayne Bailey.

Bailey, during Village Council’s Jan. 7 meeting, provided an update on construction progress at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites and the Hampton Inn at 171 Water Tower Drive. The hotels are located side by side, with the Hampton Inn being built nearest to Route 528.

“The delays are getting shorter and shorter as we press on, but I see it opening in March.” — Madison Village Administrator Dwayne Bailey

“typical logistic issues for a large project with multiple trades,” Bailey said.

“The delays are getting shorter and shorter as we press on, but I see it opening in March,” he said.

Meanwhile, construction at the Hampton Inn has run into weather problems with its exterior, Bailey said. He added that he wasn’t sure if developers would need to adjust their previously scheduled May opening.

Madison Village leaders believe that the hotels could serve as a catalyst for economic development in their own community as well as the entire Grand

River Valley, which has become a magnet for tourists with its many wineries.

In addition, the hotels have the potential to market themselves as a place to stay for competitors and spectators drawn to the SPIRE Institute, a state-of-the-art athletic complex in Geneva.

SPIRE Institute is located on Route 534, just north of I-90, about five miles from where the new Madison hotels are being built. In recent years, SPIRE has hosted events such as the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championships, NCAA Division I Track and Field Invitational and the U.S. Masters Swimming Summer National Championship.

Bailey said at the Jan.

7 council meeting that he’s been getting at least one call a week from individuals seeking lodging for large groups, and he’s been referring those callers to operators of the new Madison hotels.

Construction of the Holiday Inn began in the summer of 2017. The 81-room hotel is being built by Pride One Construction and cost of the project was estimated at $10 million in a 2017 news release from Madison Village.

A year later, ground was broken and construction started on the adjacent Hampton Inn. The $11.1 million hotel will offer 82 rooms and is being built by JCI Contractors Inc. of Ashtabula, a JCI news release issued in July 2018 stated.
