Winter Social for families a respite from cold
Morse Avenue Community Center in Painesville had the cure for cabin fever on Feb. 9.
The city hosted its first Winter Social from noon to 2 p.m., offering food and family fun. Activities included dancing, games, a photo booth, crafts and handing out goody bags.
“This is a great time,” said Jane Bagnall of Painesville, who brought 6-yearold George to the event. “We’re always looking for something to do on cold days.”
More than 25 people were in attendance, most pre-registering with a couple of walk-ins. Cost was $20 for two people, and $7 for each additional guest.
The social replaced a Father-Daughter Dance held the last several years. Attendance at the dance had been on the decline, said Painesville Recreation Supervisor Kevin Cindric.
“We felt that this event could be a special time for both boys and girls and did not need to be limited to just fathers and daughters,” he said.
Targeting elementaryage children, the event was advertised on social media, in the newspaper and via fliers at area schools. Preregistration was requested because of limited space at the center, which was renovated in recent years.
While other city recreation events are free to the public — Spirit of the Season, Fall Fest and the annual Easter Egg Hunt — city officials charged admission to cover the event’s costs.
“We may look for a sponsor for it in the future,” Cindric said.
“We hope that our families enjoy the new event and are happy that we are welcoming everyone,” he said. “Our main goal is to provide a fun, safe and memorable moment for all the families that attend.”
