Search and rescue training is focus of workshop
Event is slated from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 23 at Notre Dame College
Notre Dame College is offering a one-day seminar to provide law enforcement officers, safety personnel and citizen volunteers with search and rescue training.
The Search and Rescue Initial Actions, or SARIA, workshop, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Feb. 23, in Regina Hall Room 124 on the Notre Dame campus in South Euclid. The seminar, which includes multiple tabletop simulation exercises, is approved by the National Association for Search and Rescue.
Notre Dame, which offers bachelor’s degree programs in criminal justice and emergency management, is sponsoring the workshop in conjunction with NASAR, Northeast Ohio Search and Rescue, and Buckeye Emergency Response Training School.

The course is designed primarily for front-line law enforcement officers but is also valuable for fire, EMS and search and rescue personnel. The workshop also is open to concerned citizen volunteers. No prerequisite training is required.

Government agencies and nonprofit search and rescue teams use NASAR’s material and certifications to produce highly skilled searchers who work within their communities and are available for mutual aid regionally and nationally, the release stated.
NASAR uses standards developed by the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency, the National Fire Protection Association, American Society for Testing and Materials, and other prominent organizations build its education courseware, publications and certifications.
The SARIA course is presented by the Notre Dame Finn Center and the Office of Professional Development.
