TRAVELERS’ CHECKS

-

When my mom and dad took our family foursome to the Magic Kingdom in the 1970s, my sister and I rode in a camper on the back of a pickup truck, while my dad drove around the clock. This time, my partner and I used two days — sleeping at a rest stop in Virginia — to make the 1,000-mile journey in a 40-foot class-A motorhome. During my first trip, we parked in an orange grove in Kissimmee, Florida, and commuted to the park. In January, my partner and I parked in Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground on the Disney property and used public transportation the among four parks and Disney Springs lifestyle center. The 700-acre Disney campground is a bonus experience in itself. In fact, we met people who camp there for Disney’s carefully curated experience and don’t even go into the amusement parks. Opened in November 1971, just two months after Magic Kingdom, the campground was so popular that it was expanded from 232 campsites to 784 campsites and 409 wilderness cabins. And it stays busy. Lodging in two-bedroom stay-in-place RVs is often a first-time motorhome experience for visitors. Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground: 4510 N.
