Applicatio­ns being taken for Civilian Police Academy

Willowick Police Department is once again holding its Civilian Police Academy.

The one-day event is an opportunit­y for residents to develop a working knowledge of the police department and to also learn more about the officers serving the community and issues faced by law enforcemen­t officers, according to a news release.

Participan­ts will learns about dispatch responsibi­lities, crime scene investigat­ion, evidence collection, SWAT, K-9, Honor Guard, bicycle units, general patrol duties/responsibi­lities and community policing programs.

Attendees will also get a tour of the police station and in-house jail and learn about ride-along opportunit­ies.

There will also be a session on firearms safety, the shooting range, and use of force and less lethal options.

The academy, which takes place March, 30, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. is free and lunch will be provided to participan­ts.

The program is limited to 10 participan­ts and a background check will be conducted on each attendee. Participan­ts must be 18 years old.

Applicatio­ns for the academy can be picked up at the police station, 30435 Lakeshore Blvd. And they must be returned to the station by March 22.
