Clark Kellogg Award watch list
The 2019 Clark Kellogg Award will be presented to the News-Herald’s boys basketball player of the year at Hooley House in Mentor on March 19. Cornerstone Christian’s Michael Bothwell, now playing at Furman, won the inaugural Kellogg Award in 2018. Three finalists for the 2019 award will be announced March 11. The following players, listed in alphabetical order, remain in contention for the award.
CJ Charleston, senior, Gilmour: First team all-district choice finished second in the area in scoring at 24.7 points per game and third in 3-point shooting with 73 made 3-pointers. The Youngstown State football commit notched 30-point performances in five of six games earlier this season. Gilmour’s all-time leading scorer put up 42 points in the Lancers’ regular-season finale against Benedictine. Finished with 30 points in Gilmour’s sectional final loss to Aurora.
Garvin Clarke, junior, Euclid: Averaged team highs with 17.1 points and six assists per game during Euclid’s 15-7 regular season. Led all scorers with 23 points in a sectional final victory over Maple Heights. Second team all-district selection surpassed 1,000 career points in February.
DJ Dial, senior, Brush: Arcs’ point guard averaged 15 points and an area-best 9.6 assists per game for 19-3 Brush, which went undefeated in league play to claim its third straight Western Reserve Conference title. First team alldistrict selection.
Luka Eller, junior, Lake Catholic: D-II District Player of the Year finished third in the area in scoring at 24.1 points per game averaged a double-double with 10.6 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-7 forward led Lake Catholic to a 17-5 regular season. Cougars’ all-time leading scorer finished with 23 points in a sectional final win over Chardon.
Luke Floriea, junior, Mentor: Led 20-2 Mentor in scoring and assists with 19.2 points and 7.3 assists per game. First team alldistrict selection. Recorded a game-high 22 points with five 3-pointers in a sectional final win over Mayfield. Scored a career-high 39 points against Euclid on Jan. 8.
Andre Harris, senior, Brush: The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 17.2 points, 8.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game for 19-3 Brush, which went undefeated in league play to claim its third straight Western Reserve Conference title. Signed with Wright State in November. First team alldistrict selection surpassed 1,000 career points in the Arcs’ sectional final victory over Madison.
Curtis Houston, senior, Richmond Heights: The 6-foot-3 point guard led 16-6 Richmond Heights to its second straight CVC Valley title. First team all-district selection averaged 12.8 points, eight assists and 7.2 rebounds per game during the Spartans’ regular season.
John Hugley, junior, Brush: 6-foot-8 center scored at 16.1 points game and ranked second in the area in rebounding at 12.6 rebounds per game for 19-3 Brush. Led the team in blocked shots at 1.9 per game and averaged 3.7 assists per game. Scored a season-high 34 points against Mayfield on Feb. 8. First team all-district selection holds many high-major Division I offers from schools including Pitt, Xavier and Nebraska.
Andrew Keller, senior, Riverside: The 6-foot guard set the Beavers’ singlegame scoring record with 55 points against Chardon on Feb. 8. Surpassed 1,000 career points in January. Third team all-district ranked fifth in the area in scoring at 22.5 points game. Led Riverside with 6.2 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game. Scored a gamehigh 25 points in a sectional semifinal loss to Mayfield.
Jayson Woodrich, senior, Beachwood: D-III District Player of the Year led the area in scoring at 26.1 points per game and 3-point shooting with 87 made 3-pointers during the regular season. Averaged closed to a double-double with 9.9 rebounds per game. Surpassed 1,000 career points against West Geauga on Jan. 31. Recorded seven 30-point games and posted a season-high 46 points against Revere on Dec. 28. 6-foot-5 senior scored 22 points in a sectional final loss to Kirtland.
Davin Zeigler, senior, Benedictine: First team all-district honoree led the 12-10 Bengals with 20.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game during the regular season. Bowling Green signee scored 18 points in a sectional final win over Chagrin Falls.
