For the record: The Rangers are in the regional tournament for the first time since 1999 after their 65-57 win over Euclid in the Perry District championship game last week. Solon is back in the regionals, where it was last year as well with a much-different cast, following a 59-42 win over Cleveland Heights . ... North junior Destiny Leo is a premier player in northeastern Ohio. She had 36 points (including 12-for-13 from the line) against Euclid. She also averages 8.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.2 steals per game. Sophomore Abby Carter had 18 against Euclid and is also a strong defender and rebounder . ... This is Solon’s eighth year in a row at the regionals. Coach Trish Kruse (Chagrin Falls graduate) guided the team to the state title game last year. The Comets graduated seven seniors, so this is a different team - but still very dangerous. Solon plays fast and scores a lot of points thanks to a full-court defense with a lot of trapping. Six-foot sophomore Hailey Weaver (16.6), shooting guard Riyah Ali (13.1) and wing Sammi Rinicella (11.6) all score in double figures. Kampf’s pick: Solon

Perry has been spectacular on defense throughout the tournament, particularly in the district final when the Pirates limited defending Lakeside District champion Gilmour to 44 points (19 at halftime). Offensively, Lauren Sutyak’s 10 points led the Pirates in the title game. However, it’s usually sophomore guards Elle Infalvi and Madyson Hacking leading the way as the team’s only two double-digit scorers. Senior guard Anna Sorine is a heady leader and strong defender. Senior post Makenzie Hacking played well in the district final . ... The Irish have nine losses, but have played a very difficult schedule. Four of their losses are to regional-qualifying Cornerstone (D4), Elyria Catholic (D3), Canton McKinley (D1) and Canton Glenoak (D1).
