Road repairs, construction slated
Painesville Township has multiple road repairs and improvements slated across the rest of 2019.
A recent grant received from the Ohio Public Works Commission will cover the expenses for 46 percent of the costs to pave Paradise, Orton, and Hickory Hill roads throughout the first half of 2019, according to trustees.
Separately, repaving will also be done along Buckeye and Fairdale roads, Sycamore Drive, Arden Avenue and sections of Oakwood Boulevard. These repairs are possible due to 1.95-mill continuous levy which was passed in November.
Trustees emphasized that not all roads that run through the township are actually owned by the township. Only public roads solely under their ownership will be maintained by the township’s service department.
Main connector roads like Mentor Avenue, North Ridge Road, Madison Avenue and state Route 84 are serviced by either the Lake County Engineer’s Office or the Ohio Department of Transportation.
The selection and order of which roads are to be repaired is determined based on level of necessity.
“We evaluate each of our roads in the spring and update our five-year plan,” trustees stated in a township newsletter. “Our approach is a mix of ‘worst first’ and preventative maintenance and repairs to extend the service life of our roadways.”
Concurrent to road repairs, a large regional detention pond will be built on the closed Fairway Pines golf course. The detention pond will be approximately a square mile in diameter and is intended to aid in draining storm-water from the surrounding area.
Construction is not expected to begin until 2020 but engineering firm Enviroscience has begun work to obtain required permits and design the pond’s structure. Trustees have stated the pond will be a modern and efficient system to collect storm-water and release slowly, thus reducing the flooding that has historically occurred in this part of the township.
The service department will also be patching potholes as weather permits. The township urges residents to report any potholes to 440-352-2661.
