- Staff Report

Euclid resident Sierra Day and her boyfriend Deonte Lewis were sentenced March 20 in the death Day’s 4-year-old daughter Aniya Day-Garrett

Day, 24, was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Lewis, 27, received a sentence of life in prison with the eligibility for parole in 20 years.

They were sentenced by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Timothy McCormick.

The pair were both found guilty March 7 of aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault permitting child abuse, three counts of endangering children, and tampering with evidence stemming from the child’s March 11, 2018, death.

Euclid police and EMS services responded on the day of Day-Garrett’s death to 22701 Lakeshore

Blvd. in Euclid for a report of an unresponsive child.

Police reported that DayGarrett had burn marks and was emaciated and bruised. She was taken from the apartment complex to the Cleveland Clinic Euclid Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office released the victim’s cause of death two days later. According to the office, the cause was cerebral infarction due to blunt impact to head with subdural hematoma. She was also malnourished.

Aniya’s father Mickhal Garrett said he was waiting for this day and he’s sought justice to the full extent of the law.

“These murderers, these monsters, ruined my entire life,” he said.

He said he wanted to keep fighting for justice and safety for all children in the community.

Day did not speak at the sentencing. Lewis said that he loved Aniya and denied that he ever hurt her.

McCormick said he’s never seen such “callous disregard for human life” as Day showed her daughter.
