Indians’ Santana captures his first Silver Slugger award

Indians first baseman Carlos Santana earned his first Silver Slugger award, it was announced Nov. 7.

Santana is the first Indians first baseman to receive the award. In 2019, he batted .281 with 30 doubles, one triple, 34 home runs and 93 RBI in 158 games. He had career highs in WAR (4.5), runs, hits, RBI and OPS.

He was third in the American League in on-base percentage and walks and tied for sixth in runs. The award was voted on by MLB coaches and managers.

76ERS’ SIMMONS OUT >> 76ers guard Ben Simmons will miss the Nov. 8 game at Denver because of sprained AC joint in his right shoulder. Simmons will be evaluated again before the Nov. 10 game against Charlotte.

CLIPPERS FINED >> The NBA has fined the Clippers $50,000 for statements made by Coach Doc Rivers and others that were “inconsiste­nt with (Kawhi) Leonard’s health status.”

Leonard sat out the Clippers’ 129-124 home loss to the Bucks on Nov. 6. The NBA announced the fine Nov. 7 in a statement, saying: “Following additional review of the LA Clippers not playing Kawhi Leonard in last night’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks, the NBA has confirmed that the team’s decision to sit Leonard for management of an injury was consistent with league rules. The team has reasonably determined that Leonard is suffering from an ongoing injury to the patella tendon in his left knee and has been placed by the team at this time on an injury protocol for back-to-back games . ... ”

WOODS PICKS SELF >> Tiger Woods created his own slice of history Nov. 7 by becoming the first Presidents Cup captain to use one of his wild-card selections on himself. He is the second playing captain in the Presidents Cup. Hale Irwin played in the inaugural matches in 1994 when he qualified for the team.

FOX FIRES CARTER >> Fox Sports has fired Cris Carter after three years at the network. Fox Sports issued a statement saying Carter was no longer at the network and had no further comment.
