Mentor captures Pioneer Classic
A look at a few highlights from News-Herald coverage area teams from games this past week:
• Mentor popped in 19 goals over four games to win the Orange Division at the Pioneer Classic in Columbus. The Cardinals capped the tournament with a 5-2 win Jan. 19 over Olentangy Orange and also had a 3-1 victory over Olentangy Berlin. Berlin and Orange are second and third, respectively, in the Capital Hockey Conference’s White Division.
Against Olentangy Orange in the final, Eric Toth had two goals and an assist and Jack O’Donnell logged a pair of assists.
Mentor is riding a 13game winning streak since its lone loss to Shaker Heights, 1-0, in the Thornton Park tournament final Dec. 15. Their longest win streak during their 305-2 campaign last winter was nine. Prior to last season, the Cardinals’ longest string of consecutive wins was eight from Dec. 27, 2003 to Jan. 11, 2004.
• Gilmour went 4-1 in its annual trek to suburban Toronto for the St. Andrew’s MLK tournament. The four wins came over two days against four Ontario opponents: Lakefield College, the hosts, Korah and St. Charles College. A 5-4 setback to King City in the tournament final snapped a six-game winning streak.
• NDCL recorded a 6-1 win in a morning ice slot Jan. 18 against Elyria Catholic at Garfield Heights. Gavin Mrofchak had a goal and three assists for the Lions, and Alex Steen and Wyatt Dynes each lit the lamp twice.
• Brush recorded a 6-0 win over Bay on Jan. 12, which marked the Arcs’ first shutout since Dec. 28, 2013, when they blanked Canfield, 10-0.
