The Browns on Feb. 13 added three more assistant coaches to the staff of first-year head coach Kevin Stefanski.

That wasn’t the only news of the day. Ian Rapoport of NFL. com reported former Colts general manager Ryan Grigson is now serving in an advisory and consulting role with the team.

Chris Kiffin will coach the defensive line. Scott Peters was added as an assistant offensive line coach and T.J. McCartney as an offensive assistant.

Kiffin, a former defensive lineman in his playing days at Colorado State, broke into coaching in 2005 as a defensive assistant at the University of Idaho. He was an offseason quality control intern with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006 then went back to the college scene as a graduate assistant at Mississippi. He made stops at several other colleges until 2018 when he was hired by the San Francisco 49ers as a pass rush specialist.

Browns defensive coordinator Joe Woods was the 49ers defensive backs coach in 2019. Woods believes Kiffin will get the most out of Myles Garrett and the rest of the Browns defensive linemen.

“I’ve known Chris for a long time,” Woods told ClevelandBrowns.com.

“I’ve known Chris for a long time,” Woods told ClevelandBrowns.com.

“I worked with his father,

Monte, down in Tampa Bay and that’s when I first met Chris.

“This previous year, he did a great job at San Francisco as assistant defensive line coach. He has a great football IQ. He relates to players very well, he can coach anybody and I’m excited for him to get his first full-time role in the NFL coaching the defensive line here.”

Garrett had 10 sacks in 10 games last year before being suspended by the NFL for pulling off Mason Rudolph’s helmet and hitting him in the head with it. Garrett was reinstated on Feb. 12.

“Myles is an athletic freak as everyone knows, but what excites me about him is he’s just getting started,” Kiffin said. “In

talking with him, he’s really eager to get back to work and he wants to chase greatness. I think when you have that mindset, it’s going to be really easy to coach. It’s going to be really fun to coach and it’s going to carry off on everybody else too in the room.”

Peters never coached in football before being hired by the Browns. He will work alongside offensive line coach Bill Callahan.

Peters was in the NFL as a guard and center from 2002 through 2009, playing for the Eagles, Giants, 49ers, Panthers and Cardinals. He opened an MMA gym in Scottsdale, Ariz., when his playing days ended.

“It’s great to have a former player in that position because it’s instant cred
