Baldwin Wallace advances into next round

Home cooking agreed with the Baldwin Wallace University women March 6 in the first round of the NCAA Division III women’s tournament.

Dominating from opening tip to final buzzer at Ursprung Gymnasium, the Yellow Jackets overwhelme­d Haverford (Pa.) College, 6742.

BW improved to 27-2 and ran its winning streak to 13 games with the impressive performanc­e.

The Yellow Jackets advanced to the second round on March 7 and again will be at home to face University of Chicago (21-5). Tipoff is 6 p.m.

“I’m really enjoying the ride with these players. We want it to last a lot longer,” BW coach Cheri Harrer said.

Senior guard Riley Schill (Elyria Catholic) paced a balanced BW attack with 14 points. Senior forward Lilly Edwards added 13 points. Senior guard Kasey Hughes and Hannah Fecht had 11 points and 10 points, respective­ly.

The Yellow Jackets used a blistering start to build a 22-6 lead over the Fords after one quarter.

In that decisive first quarter, the Yellow Jackets had eight steals, forced 10 turnovers and scored 12 points off those Haverford miscues.

“Our defense got us going in the first quarter and fueled us the rest of the game,” Schill said.

BW’s had leads of 37-12 at halftime and 56-24 after three quarters.

Haverford (23-5) got a game-high 16 points from senior forward Megan Furch. Senior guard Anna-Sophia

Capizzi added 11 points.

This is BW’s 16th trip to the NCAA tournament in Harrer’s 30 years on the job and the second straight year the Yellow Jackets have advanced to the second round.
