The novel coronavirus is affecting the NFL draft which is still more than a month away.

The Browns on March 12 announced through a team spokesman the team has had to alter its draft preparation.

“We are taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our staff including the reduction of travel by air for scouts and coaching,” the spokesman said.

The three-day draft, staged in Las Vegas this year, begins April 23. Free agency begins March 18.

The spokesman said it is too early to determine how travel restrictions will affect free agent visits or the visits of the 30 draft prospects the Browns are permitted to invite to Berea.

“Obviously, the situation is fluid, and we will continue to monitor and heed the advice of our medical and public officials as circumstances evolve,” the spokesman said.

In a related news item regarding COVID-19, the American Hockey League followed the lead of the NHL and suspended all games until further notice. The Monsters were scheduled to host the Rochester Americans on March 15 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. A determination had already been made that fans would not be allowed in the arena as a precaution.

“Ticket holders for that game will be contacted directly by the Monsters regarding their account options which will include a refund in the form of a credit towards future games or an immediate refund,” according to a statement from Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse officials. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered a ban on mass gatherings, including games played in enclosed facilities such as Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse where the Cavaliers and Monsters play and Nationwide Arena where the Columbus Blue Jackets play their home games.

The NBA on March 11 suspended all games until further notice. The Cavaliers’ next home game is scheduled for March 24 vs. the Kings. The Cavs also have a March 26 game against LeBron James and the Lakers on their schedule. It would be James’ only visit to Cleveland this season.

The Cavaliers are still determining how to process refunds for the game with the Lakers, if that becomes necessary, according to the news release from Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
