PGA Tour on hold

-

The PGA Tour decided March 12 to scrap the rest of The Players Championship and shut down its other tournaments for the next three weeks. Commissioner Jay Monahan had said earlier on March 12 there would be no fans at the TPC Sawgrass for the final three rounds, or at the next three tournaments on the PGA Tour schedule. The tour changed its mind late on March 12. “We did everything possible to create a safe environment for our players in order to continue the event through the weekend,” the tour said in a statement. “But at his point — and as the situation continues to rapidly change — the right thing to do for our players and our fans is to pause.” There was no immediately word whether The Players Championship would be rescheduled. The Players Championship is the premier tournament run by the PGA Tour, offering a $15 million purse, the richest in golf history.

PACKERS RELEASE GRAHAM » The Packers have released tight end Jimmy Graham after the 33-year-old veteran spent two seasons with the franchise. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst announced the move March 12. Graham had tweeted out a reference to his “next opportunity’” on March 11 after ESPN reported his release was imminent. The move creates about $8 million in cap space for the Packers. Graham caught 38 passes for 447 yards and three touchdowns last season. He had 55 receptions for 636 yards and two scores in 2018.

BILLS RE-SIGN SPAIN » A person familiar with the decision confirms to The Associated Press that the Bills have agreed to re-sign offensive lineman Quinton Spain to a three-year contract. The person spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the deal first reported by ESPN.com on March 12. Spain is a fifth-year player who was completing the one-year contract he signed with Buffalo in free agency a year ago. He proved to be a valuable addition to the Bills’ revamped line, which featured four new starters last season. Spain was credited with not allowing a sack in 16 starts and after playing the second-most snaps on offense behind only left tackle Dion Dawkins.

TITANS WAIVE WAKE » The Titans have waived linebacker Cameron Wake after one season into what had been a three-year contract. The Titans also announced March 12 they waived running back Dion Lewis, who still had two years left on the contract he signed in March 2018. Wake, who turned 38 on Jan. 30, signed with the Titans last spring after 10 seasons with Miami. The one-time All Pro and five-time Pro Bowl linebacker got 2.5 sacks in Tennessee’s season-opening win at Cleveland, giving him 100.5 for his career. Wake also had a safety in that game. But he didn’t have another sack in the next eight games before being placed on injured reserve in late November. Wake was due to count approximately $8.2 million against the salary cap.
