Free tutoring available to students

- By Crystal Beaulieu

The Educational Service Center of the Western Reserve announced it is now offering free in-person tutoring for students from any district or private school in Lake and Geauga counties.

The tutoring, made possible by funds from the Whole Child Grant, is available for sixth through 12th grade students Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. It will take place at the new Student Resource Center which is in the former Hale Road Elementary School, 56 Hale Road in Painesville Township.

Donna Zoldak-Cook, the service center’s director of Special Service & Accountability, applied for the grant because she anticipated that students would require additional support in response to the various learning models students are engaging in during the coronavirus pandemic.

“The Student Resource Center is bridging a gap for students whether they are attending school in-person, hybrid models or online learning models,” said Kristin M. Llewellyn, Family & Community Partnership liaison with the service center. “We offer a safe, welcoming space with COVID-19 safety precautions in place for the safety of our students and staff members.”

Tutoring from two Painesville City School District teachers and one Lakeland Community College professor is available in English/reading, math, science and social studies by appointment only.

The service center’s Student Resource Center officially opened its doors in January and plans to implement additional programming in the future for the community.

“We are so excited to offer this resource center opportunity for students in both Geauga and Lake Counties,” said Superintendent Jennifer Felker. “This support is significantly needed this year based on the challenges we have all faced educating students during this pandemic. We are grateful to have obtained this grant from Whole Child.”

A Geauga County location of the Student Resource Center is opening soon in the Cardinal Community Learn Center at 16000 East High Street in Middlefield.
