Weekly watch lists for Chones, Kellogg awards

The races for The News-Herald’s boys and girls basketball player of the awards are in their final weeks. See who the top contenders are for each.

The Kaayla Chones Award goes to the girls basketball player of the year in The News-Herald area.

The award is named after Chones, who starred at North High School, North Carolina State and then went on to play in the NBA. The award will be presented at season’s end.

The finalists, in alphabetic­al order, for this year’s award are:

Abby Carter: The senior guard and Akron University signee finished the season averaging 18 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.7assists, 2.4 steals with 36 3-pointers made.

Catara DeJarnette, Kenston: The junior point guard ended the season averaging 19.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.9steals, 3.7assists, with 34 3-pointers made.

Lydia Gattozzi, Beaumont: She had 17 points and six rebounds in a district semifinal loss to Gilmour. The senior guard and Canisius signee finished the season averaging 18.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.1 steals and 0.8 blocks per game. She also made 38 3-pointers.

Madyson Hacking, Perry:

She had 17 points, six rebounds, seven steals and four assists in a district semifinal win over Salem. For the season, 5he Pirates’ senior guard is averaging 17.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.7steals and 3.2assists per game, with 26 3-pointers made.

Riley Montagner, Madison: A junior guard/forward for the Blue Streaks she finished the season averaging 18 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.5steals, 1.4assists with 30 3-pointers made.

Tai Roberts, Andrews Osborne: She had 14 points, 10steals, eight assists and five steals in a sectional final loss. A junior guard for the Phoenix, she finished the season averaging 21.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 7.2 steals and 5.2assists per game, while also hitting six 3-pointers.

Riley Stopp, Cornerston­e: She had 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists in a district semifinal win over Cuyahoga Heights. The senior guard/forward for the Patriots, an Ursuline College signee, is averaging 16.8 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.1 blocks per game, with 21 3-pointers.
