Four games into Mickey Mental’s head coaching career at Notre Dame College have netted some staggering results for the football team.

The most important on April 10 at Wheeling University was another victory — this one 55-7 to improve to 4-0 in the spring. The Falcons started fast and never looked back.

On April 17, NDC host Charleston in the Mountain East Conference championship game, and will attempt to become the first football team in the history of the conference to win the MEC three straight seasons. The kickoff time has yet to be announced.

“I commend (the team) for taking the challenge of a short season,” said Mental on the NDC football Twitter account. “... We’re hitting on all phases. We have one big one left, and we’re going to put our best foot forward.”

At the rate they are playing, don’t bet against the Falcons, who are averaging 54.7 points in four spring games. At running back, there is no doubt Virginia Union transfer Tabyus Taylor has proven more than capable to fill the shoes left by two-time All-American back Jaleel McLaughlin.

Against Wheeling (2-2), Taylor posted his fourth straight game of least 100plus yards, only this time he blew past that mark in a big way. Taylor rushed for 267 yards on 24 carries and had touchdown runs of 64 and 59 yards.

“I came into the game (thinking) of setting the tone,” said Taylor. “Let’s get it started. Let’s not play with these guys ... I’ve got to give credit to my (offensive line). The whole offense, the receivers blocked incredible.”

For the spring season, Taylor has 770 rushing yards on 74 carries (10.4yard average) with 10 TDs, plus a 95-yard kickoff return for another TD.

There were contributors throughout the Falcons’ lineup.

QB Chris Brimm (14 of 24 passing for 189 yards and two TD passes) ran 10 yards for the game’s first TD, and by the end of the first half it was 31-0.

Willoughby South graduate Devanaire Confliffe had a big day with five receptions for 113 yards and a 53-yard TD.

Backup running back Rob Singletary added a 69yard TD run, as NDC ran for 400 yards as a team.

One stat reflects how dominant the Falcons were on this day. NDC ran 69 plays for 589 yards. Wheeling ran 64 plays and couldn’t figure out the Falcons’ defense, which allowed just 138 yards of offense and forced two turnovers.
