Browns rookie linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah will miss the start of his first NFL training camp after being placed on the COVID-19 list. The second-round pick from Notre Dame reported July 24.

Rookie linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah was placed on the reserve/ COVID-19 list on July 25, the Browns announced, one day after reporting to Berea with other rookies for the start of training camp

It is not known whether Owusu-Koramoah tested postive for COVID or if he had close contact with someone who did. Nor can the Browns announce whether a player is vaccinated.

A player who is vaccinated can return to practice if two tests separated by 24 hours come back negative. A player who tests positive and isn’t vaccinated has to quarantine 10 days.

The Browns traded picks 59 and 89 to Carolina for the 52nd pick in the draft to select Owusu-Koramoah. The Browns also got pick 113 from the Panthers in the trade. The Browns then traded 113 and their 2021 seventh-round pick to Detroit for pick 153 in 2021 and a 2022 fourth-round pick. They used the 153rd pick on linebacker Tony Fields from West Virginia.

Owusu-Koramoah, 6-foot1, 221 pounds, played college football at Notre Dame. He made 62 tackles in 2020, 11 of them for losses. He was honored with the (Dick) Butkus Award as the top linebacker in the country.

The Browns plan to use him in a variety of ways. He can rush the passer on one play and drop into coverage the next. He is built like a safety.

“He’s very smart player, very athletic,” Browns defensive coordinator Joe Woods said during minicamp. “You can see the speed, the quickness and the change of direction. He’ll be able to match up well against tight ends. The thing we have to be careful of, and I have to be careful of, is you look at him, and you want to do a lot, but coming in as a rookie, you want to gradually bring him along.

“As he gains experience and understands the defense more and more, then you’ll start to expand it. There are some things drawn on the whiteboard I want to do, but we probably won’t get to all of them this year.”

Quarterbacks reported with the rookies on July 24. Remaining veterans are due in Berea on July 27.

Camp begins with closed practices July 28 and 29. The first practice open to the public is July 30.
