Broadmoor School in Mentor has been chosen as the firstever school partner in a Sept. 11 education program.
Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities/Deepwood’s Broadmoor School in Mentor has been chosen as the first-ever school partner in Ohio and the only Ohio school for this school year to participate in the Freedom Flag Foundation’s National Freedom Flag and World Trade Center Steel Education Program.
“We are excited about the opportunity to work with such a diverse and inclusive school,” John Riley, president of the Freedom
Flag Foundation, said in a news release.
The program’s mission is to establish partnerships in all 50 states to educate the next generation about the 9/11 terrorist attacks using the Freedom Flag and WTC steel artifacts from the 92nd to 95th floors of Tower 1.
Broadmoor School accepted the honor to be Ohio’s Program representative for the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
“Our students and staff are excited to have this opportunity to teach this generation of students the history and significance behind the events of 9/11,” Linda DeRosa, director of children services and principal of Broadmoor School, said in the release. “Through social studies and history lessons, our students will learn about first responders and patriotism by exploring concepts of heroism, gratitude, and sympathy.”
The Freedom Flag Foundation loaned Broadmoor School a piece of WTC Steel recovered from Ground Zero for its use in educational outreach and display over the next year. It’s currently on display in the entrance lobby.
As part of the program, Broadmoor School has also received a 9/11 Freedom Flag that will be flown annually on Patriot Day below the US Flag through the month of September.
A private flag raising ceremony will be held Sept. 13 in which government dignitaries, local veterans, and Broadmoor students and staff will reflect on the significance this historical event, the release stated.
“The county board’s mission is to promote diversity and inclusion in all aspects of community,” said LCBDD Superintendent Elfie Roman in the release. “The selection of Broadmoor School to represent Ohio is a hallmark; reflecting on remembering where we have been and the importance of including and educating others to make positive moment forward.”
American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 214, is serving as a liaison for the Freedom Foundation, as well as a partner with Broadmoor School.
