Mayfield graduate Mitch Longo closed out his 2021 season in style with the Biloxi Shuckers.

On Sept. 20, Longo was named Double-A South Player of the Week — thanks to a standout performance at the plate.

He led Double-A South for the week in total bases with 14 total bases, hit .500 and slugged 1.400 with a double, triple, two home runs, five RBI and three runs in three games.

Biloxi’s week was cut short last week by two games because of Tropical Storm Nicholas.

Prior to the start of this season, Longo — a 14thround pick by the Indians in 2016 — was released by Cleveland and later signed by the Brewers organization. The outfielder was assigned to Biloxi, and played well enough this season to earn a 20-game promotion to Triple-A Nashville.

Longo admitted in 2019 he dreamed of one day playing for his hometown Indians if he ever got to call to the majors, but also knew the realities of pro ball. Nothing was a guarantee.

“It’s cool to think about and dream about but at the end of the day you can’t play general manager,” Longo told The News-Herald in 2019. “If I can help the (Indians), I’ll be there. If

I can’t, then I’ll help someone else.”

The month of September was notable for Longo at Biloxi as well. He hit .400 for the month with a .413 on-base percentage. In 11 games, he had three doubles, two triples, five home runs, 12 RBI and 11 runs scored.

In 75 games with the

Shuckers in 2021, Longo hit .308 with 15 doubles, four triples, 11 home runs, 36 RBI and 47 runs scored. He also led Biloxi in stolen bases with 18 in 20 attempts.

While at Triple-A Nashville, Longo, 26, hit .182 with a homer, four RBI, 10 runs and four stolen bases in 20 games.
