Man gets to 28 years to life
Cleveland man sentenced for role in fatal shooting
A Cleveland man was sentenced to life in prison with possibility of parole after 28 years for his role in a Euclid shooting that killed a 34-year-old woman.
Curtis Gatheright, 22, was sentenced Sept. 21 by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge David T. Matia in connection with the Oct. 2, 2020, shooting death of Shalaymiah Moore of East Cleveland.
According to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, Gatheright and co-defendant Daylonta Jones spotted Moore sitting in her vehicle with a friend.
They exited their vehicle and approached her car in an attempt to rob Moore and her friend. When Moore tried to drive away, shots were fired and she was struck once in the back as she crashed into a parked truck nearby. The men returned to their vehicle and drove off.
Gatheright was arrested Oct. 5 and Jones on Oct. 6 following an investigation by the Euclid Police Department.
Both men pleaded guilty to charges in August. Gatheright pleaded guilty to unclassified felony aggravated murder, first-degree felony aggravated robbery and second-degree felony felonious assault. Jones pleaded guilty to first-degree felony involuntary manslaughter, first-degree felony aggravated robbery and seconddegree felony felonious assault.
Jones is now scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 29.
Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley previously described Moore as a “wonderful mom, daughter, and friend to many in our community.”
