Q: I think I’ve been depressed for most of my life. I’ve tried going to therapy a few times, but I have never felt that it helped me. I go to work, keep up my house, and care for my children, but I just don’t feel happy. Do you think giving therapy another shot would be worthwhile for me?

A: Thank you for your question—I think a lot of people have had similar experiences, so I’m glad to have the opportunity to address the issue of chronic, treatment-resistant depression. Sometimes people have to go through a number of different therapists before finding one they can really connect with. Other times, it might be that the therapy approach that isn’t a good fit, and so you don’t see the results you had hoped for.

At Premier Behavioral Health Services, our trained clinicians use a therapeutic approach called Dialectical Behavior Therapy (or DBT), which combines acceptance strategies with change strategies. It is a research-based approach to treatment that will help you to understand your emotional experiences, while also teaching you specific skills to manage your emotions well. Our goal here is to work with you in a nurturing environment to help

you identify what you need to “create a life worth living,” and how to take those next steps.

We also offer different levels of care here at PBHS. In addition to individual therapy, we offer

educational groups that will teach you the skills needed to build “a life worth living” over the course of two months. This can be a great option for folks who feel that they have gone as far as they can go in an individual therapy context.
