Q:I’ve noticed some changes in my mother that are starting to cause concern for my sisters and me. She stays home more, sometimes doesn’t see
her friends like she used to, sleeps a lot when not working and sometimes doesn’t get dressed until
the afternoon. We thought it was her blood pressure medicine, but it was ok the last time she saw her doctor. He said there is nothing wrong with her medically. Why is she acting like this?
Thank you for your letter. If you are observing changes in behavior like those you described, it is always prudent to check with a physician to rule
out any physical or medical cause. If your mother is isolating, has less energy, and
no longer enjoys previously enjoyed activities, she may
be experiencing depression. Depression can seriously affect
mood, function, and quality of life, and can progress if untreated. Fortunately,
depression is a common, treatable illness, and it may be advisable at this point to
access counseling/psychological services.
Your mother would begin by having a comprehensive assessment that listens to her present concerns as well as obtain current and historical mental health, medical health, and treatment history. She would then participate
in treatment(s) that most effectively treats her symptoms and her needs. She would
receive therapeutic support while learning skills to cope with life changes, to build a sense of self-esteem and selfmastery and to increase positive emotions and experiences
If untreated, these symptoms can increase and further
expand. If you or someone you know has noticed that these symptoms are affecting your daily mood and function encourage them to seek support in counseling. If someone you know is struggling with these symptoms and has a history of depression or anxiety, please encourage them to seek further support in counseling. If you believe you someone you know may be exhibiting symptoms of depression, please call us to schedule an assessment.
